Walker Evans, Coal Miners House, 1935
Gelatin silver contact print, printed later
Inscription: print verso (pencil): Evans, W. Coal Miners House
George Eastman House
I was a little hesitant to pick a photograph by such a well known photographer because of how much has already been written about this image. That said, I love walker Evans style of documentary photography. There is something really powerful about seeing this scene without a human subject. Evans captures the humble, yet dignified nature of the interior space. He also composes the image so as to highlight the individual's/family's pop cultural interests and their aspirations by including the posters hanging on the wall. Overall, this image says a lot about the character of the house, the miner, and his family.
