Hiroshima, 1951.

JAPAN. 1951. JAPAN. Town of Hiroshima. Memorial for the victims of the atomic explosion. In the background: a former exhibition hall. 1951. Photographed by Werner Bischof.

This photograph was taken in Hiroshima, Japan, six years after the atomic bomb was dropped . I lived in Japan and am of Japanese descent. My visit to the A-Bomb Dome, as seen in the picture, was one of the most peaceful and serene moments of my life. I wish I could have found a photograph that showcased this scene in the spring, with the cherry blossoms blooming. It will always amaze me how the sight of something so terrible and devastating can now be a place of healing.
