Marlene Dietrich

Erich Salomon. Marlene Dietrich phones her little daughter from Hollywood. 1930. Data provided by University of California, San Diego.

Marlene Dietrich is one of my favorite actresses. She created an iconic campy sexual persona for herself in studio-era Hollywood, fueled by her many collaborations with director Josef von Sternberg. As much as I love the grandiose glamour she had, I have always loved seeing candid shots of her that really remind me that underneath the dress-up, she was a very stark and minimal looking woman. Still beautiful, but in a radically different way from the carefully constructed artifice within her image. 1930 was the year Dietrich moved to Hollywood from Germany after having established herself with The Blue Angel. This picture not only captures a rarely seen side of her but it also shows her irrepressibly youthful vibe that would fade away after a couple of years at Paramount.
